asker I'd really like to start up a bl manga collection, but I can't read Japanese at all! Could you recommend any good bl mangas that have been licensed in English?

sure np anon! general disclaimer being that our tastes could be wildly different but here are some that I personally like a lot that were officially translated.

Aniya Yuiji’s Men of Tattoos
Minazuki Akira’s Tonight’s Take-Out Night and This Night’s Everything
Ogura Muku’s Castle Mango and Secrecy of the Shivering Night
Hoshino Lily’s Mr. Flower Groom and Mix Mix Chocolate
Takanaga Hinako’s Little Butterfly*
Morozumi Sumitomo’s Merry Family Plan
Kano Shiuko’s Punch
Jaryuu Dokuro’s Sugar Milk
Yamagata Satomi’s Fake Fur and Manic Love
Maki Ebishi’s I Give To You
Est Em’s Age Called Blue
Psyche Delico’s Love Full of Scars
Tsurugi Kai’s Black Knight
Kojima Lalako Ninth Life Love

* as much as I LOVE Little Butterfly the translated version changed their ages and shit which I detest so I personally don’t own it and thus feel a little weird recommending buying it. But idk I figure not everyone is weird about that kind of stuff like me so. I fucking love Little Butterfly and definitely recommend it regardless.

ANYWAY those are all the ones I could think of off the top of my head. There are probably a whole bunch more but. /o\ This should do for now hopefully!

asker I noticed that the majority of your scans are raw. I was wondering if you were already fluent in Japanese before purchasing them or if having Raws kind of forced you to learn the language. And if so, what was your secret to learning? Suggestions would be great as well :D

in all honesty when I first started buying BL I didn’t think I could read it; I bought it because I couldn’t find raws and there were some artists I was willing to make the dive for just to look at their pretty art. But then when I started buying it, I started looking through and reading the text and realizing HUH I CAN READ THESE. tbh if you are anywhere near intermediate-level Japanese comics are incredibly easy to read since they’re so dialogue-based and the vocab is fairly simple and repetitive.

Reading BL comics is a great tool imo for reinforcing Japanese skills or introducing new phrases. (And I’m just not talking about the sex sfx ok even though BL is super helpful if that’s what you’re looking to learn.) Any kind of comic, really. They’re so easy to read and you have fun reading them, so half the time it doesn’t even feel like Japanese practice. But I had been learning Japanese for a good long while before I started reading comics, tbh. I’m nowhere near fluent, though. Perhaps upper-intermediate at most.

as for secrets to learning… ehhh. Read lots of Japanese comics, listen to Japanese music, watch Japanese tv shows, constantly go over the words you do know in your head (like when it’s slow at work I like to play a game called ‘what the fuck is this called in Japanese?’) and gradually introduce new phrases and words at a pace that’s comfortable to you.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

(p.s. my favorite JP learning tool is JapanesePod101. The podcast is free and GRANTED I’M A NERD but I love listening to it while exercising or cleaning or doing other shit. Seriously it is super helpful you can get the podcast on itunes. If you love listening to smart people teach you interesting shit you will love it too.)

asker What is your favorite BL manga? I like your blog! And I respect you fellow fujoshi, lol

unfortunately the ‘what’s your favorite?’ question is just too complicated for me so I can’t really give a concrete answer B U T here is my top ten:

Endless World by Jaryuu Dokuro
Me wo Tojite 3byou by Aniya Yuiji
Itoshi no Nekokke by Kumota Haruko
Sawatte mo Ii ka na by Matsumoto Miecohouse
Sentimental Garden Lover by Ogura Muku
Shiawase ni Naru no sa! by Kumonosuke
Akiyama-kun by Nobara Aiko
Akarui Kazoku Keikaku by Morozumi Sumitomo
Sotsugyousei by Nakamura Asumiko
Konbini-kun by Junko

and nice to meet you! 8)b

asker Sorry if you've heard this question a thousand times before but why do you like BL? Btw, love you blog~!

nah it’s fine! And thank you!

I like it for a multitude of reasons! When I first got into it when I was super young, I liked it mostly because it was something taboo. Something pornographic and non-heteronormative and in a language I didn’t understand. And part of me still likes those parts of BLas a genre.

But I also like it because the male/male aspect gives it a little extra something a hetero romance doesn’t have—the constant scrutiny of peers, the idea of overcoming this romanticized concept of adversity. Somehow I find that really appealing and endearing.

another thing I like about it is that even though both characters’ sex is ‘male’, it kind of takes the pressure off gender. You aren’t going to be bogged down with all these traditional gender roles and ideas. Sometimes the men involved are hyper-masculine, sometimes they’re a mix of both masculine and feminine traits, sometimes they’re very feminine all-around. As a woman there isn’t pressure on you to ally yourself with the female in the story—with her feelings and ideas and worries and role in the relationship—because she doesn’t exist in a traditional way. Even if the men involved are feminine, they are not women and the reader is thus separated with the pressures of ‘femaleness’ that is present in most hetero romance stories.

also just because… well… I like seeing men getting fucked.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It’s something you don’t get to see often with heterosexual romance, because unfortunately a lot of heterosexual men find the idea of being penetrated unappealing and ‘feminizing’. And as for actual gay porn and media aimed at gay men, I prefer BL over that because my personal preferences tend more toward effeminate and gentle people (whether male or female) and a lot of gay media (take bara for instance) generally portrays very masculine, buff, dudely dudes. And that’s just not my personal cup of tea so I stick with BL.

idk. Aside from those ideas stated above, I just really like it a lot for no apparent reason. I like stuff that breaks down gender norms in quiet, subtle ways and BL tends to do that for me. I can’t really explain why I feel so strongly about the genre, honestly—I just do.

asker where did you get the japanese raws for psyche delicos eroman? Q///Q

actually THIS IS A GOOD CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT IT SO I am going to introduce a new tagging system to make things easier for both me and hopefully all of you.

As follows:
scans: translated (click)
scans: download (click)
scans: mine (click)

pretty self-explanatory but I figured it would make things easier for those of you who particularly want to browse caps for stuff you can read in English, or browse stuff you can actually download, or then you’ll at least know for absolutely certain that the scans do not exist because I scanned the panel myself. Dunno when I will have it completed—I’m planning on doing mass tag editing but I’m lazy. So.

ANYWAY to answer your question anon, tl;dr Psyche Delico’s EroMan would fall under ‘scans: mine’. I scanned all the panels I posted here myself.

asker Because the tags asked: HI, I MISSED YOU. Welcome back~

you’re a sweetie anon <3 thank you for the warm welcome back!

thank you to all your replies to my last post (which has since been deleted); I decided on three posts per day since that seemed not too spammy but enough to be at least vaguely satisfying. So I have enough queued to make it through next Monday y a y. I also figured I could reply to some asks since a chunk of them have been sitting in my ask for months and months and also offer an apology for the fact that I was AWOL for a good long time.
